The Sweden Solar System

Not many people know that in Sweden, Stockholm, we have a model of our planetary system. It may not be so obvious in our city, but many of us have probably wondered if the globe has any more function than being a landmark, a beautiful silhouette at sunset or just being an arena for entertainment. Turns out that the “Globen” actually represents the sun.

The Sweden Solar System (SSS) is the world’s largest model of our planetary system. The planets are scaled in size and distance relative to the Globe and lined up to the north. The scale is 1:20 million.

Currently, about twenty planets, minor planets and comets are included in the SSS. The inner planets “orbit” in the Stockholm area, and the system covers all of Sweden from the comet Swift-Tuttle in Blekinge and the transneptune 2007 OR10 outside Malmö to stations in Luleå and Kiruna. Each model has a host station.

The SSS provides a direct experience of the vast distances in space and how small the planets are compared to the Sun. Art, mythology and science are linked, as are different places and activities in Sweden.

Each model in the Sweden Solar System has its own owner and host. The whole system is coordinated by the Swedish Astronomical Society. Read more about SSS
